As you are starting your blog, it is a good idea to write up a privacy policy. A privacy policy is a legal statement about the ways your blog collects and uses personal information. Hopefully you never have a situation come up where you need one, but it is better to be safe than sorry.
You need a privacy policy if your blog does any of the following:
- Displays ads that use cookies to show ads based on readers visits prior to coming to your blog.
- Collect any type of personal information (email subscriptions, email required with comment)
- Use a web analytics to track visitors
Basically, your blog needs a privacy policy. I am not even going to pretend to be a legal expert, so I will not go into the details of what you should include in your privacy policy. There are a lot of websites that discuss this on the web. There are also a lot of templates that are available. I recommend reading a template and then re-writing the privacy policy in your own words, in the same tone your blog is written. Not only does this make it easier for your readers to understand your privacy policy, but it also helps eliminated duplicate content (which docks you “points” in search engine optimization)
I find both of these blogs to be very helpful when it comes to legal issues and blogging:
