Fashion bloggers, are you monetizing your blog? You should be!

July 24, 2014

A fashion blog was my inspiration for starting a blog. I gawked over Sydney’s Daybook every day. She inspired me. Plus, she made blogging look so easy. I thought to myself, “all she does is wear a new outfit everyday and take pictures in it and she’s making it BIG!” Yeah, I didn’t get blogging back then, there is a lot more to it than that. Sydney even hosted a blogging party while I was still living close by. I wanted to go SO bad, but we had something going that night. 🙁 I never started a fashion blog, but I am thankful Sydney made blogging look exciting. Because, it is.

Earlier this week, I posted about how many searches different types of blogs get. Fashion Blogs gets the most searches, by A LOT! 40,500 monthly searches are made for the term “fashion blogs.” The closest in line, food blogs, only gets 14,800 searches a month. There is a lot of potential for fashion bloggers to get visits to their blog.how to monetize a fashion blog

I’ve noticed that many fashion bloggers aren’t taking advantage of their traffic by monetizing their blog. You have one of the easiest blogs to monetize: in almost every post you are sharing a product! You don’t have to wait for a company to contact you for a sponsored post, you should be an affiliate for all your favorite brands.

What is an affiliate? An affiliate is a blogger (in this case) who markets a brand or product and receives a commission as a result of their marketing. Which means: you wear your favorite company’s shirt, take some pictures with it on, post an article, and then link back to the site. When someone makes a purchase through that link, you make money from it.

For example, I am an affiliate for Just Host and Blue Host, and market them on this post. I am also an affiliate with Microsoft and market them on this post.

How to become an affiliate and make money on your fashion blog

First, make a list of the stores you buy your clothes from and recommend the most often. Now, it’s time to become an affiliate for them.

My Dad got a job at Nordstrom the day I was born. He’s been working there ever since. So, I’m going to use them as an example.

Step 1. Go to your favorite company’s website and scroll down to the very bottom. This is usually where companies link information for their affiliate programs.
Step 2. Read up on their affiliate program: what are the terms, what is the commission, etc.
Step 3. Apply for the affiliate program.

That’s it. Once accepted to the program, you will be able to log in and get links to use on your website. Now that you are an affiliate for them, go back through your old posts and update the links. Any time you mention that website, use your new affiliate link.

Make money blogging about fashion!

You work hard picking out the perfect outfit and capturing the right images for your blog, you deserve an income for all your hard work.

Don’t wait to monetize your blog until you’re a big blogger.

Even a little is more than nothing. Plus, you never know when you’re going to start getting a lot of traffic, it’s better to be ready when it does come! Wouldn’t it stink if you had a post get a thousand hits and all of those people loved the outfit you had on so much they clicked your link and bought it… and you weren’t an affiliate for them yet.

Think of all that money you are missing out on.

These tips aren’t just for fashion bloggers. If you are talking about a product on your blog, go and see if the company has an affiliate program.

This is me, trying to be a fashion blogger:

To bad you weren’t around for these pictures. We ate bacon for dinner, so I smelt as good as I look! And this is why I’m not a fashion blogger:

I had a pretty cute assistant though. He carried my jewelry swaps for me. Oh, and the camera man was pretty sexy. Thanks for taking these pictures, hun!

Now it’s your turn? Are you already an affiliate for the companies you love and promote? Or has this article inspired you to start monetizing your blog?

I guess it’s time to admit I’ve been stalking your blog like crazy! I had never really thought about blogging as something I might enjoy, but thanks to your blog, I’m officially in a constant state of brainstorming and have been drafting a few posts. Hopefully I can make the leap and publish sometime soon! I’m having trouble with my domain and tagline. I agree that going with my name is easy and allows me to go in any direction, but I don’t know if it’s too hard for people to remember (Shallary Marie) What do you think? Thanks for all the info! Your blog is very motivating and easy to understand.

Great tips! I already use RewardStyle and it can be a bit slow to start off but it can work really well. I also use the GLAM/MODE network which has some great opportunities for fashion bloggers/websites.

For fashion bloggers, I’d highly recommend applying to RewardStyle: https://www.rewardstyle.com/

It’s an affiliate network that was created about 4 years ago, by fashion bloggers, for fashion bloggers. They work directly with retailers to negotiate higher commission rates than you’ll get for many of the same retailers through a different affiliate program. They also have a lot of handy tools, for grabbing affiliate links while shopping an e-commerce site, as well as for publishing. If you’ve ever seen fashion bloggers on Instagram mention LIKEtoKNOWit, that’s part of RewardStyle: http://liketoknow.it/

Thank you so much for the advice. Been putting a ton of thought into this and never even considered huge stores like Nordstroms to even be an option! I also agree that the sooner the better. Even though I’m just building, I think there’s no better time than the present. Like you said, be ready for the traffic. I want to be all set for when it starts to roll in! 🙂

    Have a great weekend!
