How much money does your blog make per 1000 pageviews?

June 17, 2015

Income and traffic reports are becoming very popular these days. I always find them interesting to read, but frequently find myself feeling envious.

I’m sure you’ve felt the same. I mean, who wouldn’t want to be making $15,000 a month blogging?
Most of us aren’t making that much (yet) and that’s okay. You have to remember that your blog is at a different stage than other blogs. Instead of comparing the actual numbers, I like to compare my RPM to other bloggers and then I feel much better about the success of my blog.

Pin it for later!

You might not have as many pageviews or a big of a paycheck as the mega bloggers, but there is a way for you to see how your income measures up based on the number of pageviews your blog has.

What is RPM? Revenue per 1000 impressions. RPM is used to calculate how much money your website makes per 1000 pageviews. Here is the formula: income/pageviews X 1000 = RPM
Source

My RPM for May, 2015 is $45.79. A lot of people will tell you that it takes a lot of traffic to make money, but it doesn’t! You can make an income blogging before you get into the hundred thousand pageviews a month.

Here are some other RPM’s for bloggers – both big and small. Click on the link to see their full income report.

Pinch of Yum, 10.83 Apr
Pulling Curls, 12.28 May
A Whimsical Life, 23.72 May
Platings and Pairings, 10.43 May
Just a Girl and Her Blog, 35.48 Apr
Beauty through Imperfection 11.50 May

Obviously, there are a lot of factors that go into a blog’s monetary and traffic success. Just because your RPM is higher or lower than another blogger’s, does not mean you aren’t as successful. I just like using RPM as a good reference guide to see how I am performing when I get to caught up in comparing the big numbers.

Tracking your RPM can also help you improve your blog.

I highly recommend you track your RPM for your own blog. This will help you see how you are performing from month to month. Maybe you had a huge spike in traffic this month due to a series you ran on your blog. If you compare your RPM from this month, to last month, you’ll be able to see if that traffic spike was beneficial to your income or not. Hopefully your RPM stays the same or increase.

If it decreased, you might want to decide if the series is worth continuing or how you could capitalize on that new traffic source.

Start tracking your RPM this month so that you can make improvements and hopefully make more money blogging.

I’m all about tracking and metrics, but hadn’t thought about tracking it exactly this way yet. I love it!

I’ve only done three income reports so far (even though I’ve been blogging since 2006), but for my most recent report from April, my RPM was $41.10. Seeing that compared to bloggers with much more traffic than my site currently has makes me excited for the future.

Congrats on your own earnings and growth!

WOOT! $41.10 is impressive, congrats. Hopefully your RPM will continue to stay that high (or grow) as your traffic and income do.

Okay, I’m definitely going to have to start tracking mine. I’m not sure why I never thought of doing that before.
