What type of blog should I start? [4 questions to help you pick a niche]

June 14, 2017

Have you felt the urge to start a blog, but aren’t quite sure what kind of blog to start? I have been in that situation before. Some of the blog topics I have or had are a coupon blog (for a week, it just wasn’t my thing), a food blog, a craft blog, a wedding floral blog, a family blog, and this blog. You can find a blog topic that you works for you!

If you’re ready to start a blog that can generate an income, ask yourself the following questions to help you decide what you should blog about.

What kind of blog should I start?

Bonus: get the Blog Niche Worksheet!

4 questions that will help you decide what type of blog to start.

What am I passionate about?

Think about all the things you are passionate about. What do you enjoy? What do you get excited about? It is easy to talk about things you are passionate about. You will be more willing to invest your time into your blog if you are genuinely interested in the subject.

What am I already doing?

Are you giving your house a makeover? Do you sew on a regular basis? Do you play video games more than you’d like to admit? Do you experiment in the kitchen on a regular basis? If you are already doing something a lot, why not blog about it? The problem I had with a craft blog is I wasn’t crafting before I started the blog. It sounded like fun though! I still love to craft, but it’s not something I do frequently enough  (or want to do frequently enough) to blog about it.

What do I have to offer that others can learn from?

People are going to come to your site to gain information. They want to learn from you. What can you teach others? Don’t worry too much about being the best at your subject; sometimes the best learner is the teacher. Just be willing to give it your all.

What do I talk to my friends about?

Start paying attention to the conversations you have with your friends and on social media. Blogging is a lot of talking (just in typing format). What are you sharing on Facebook? What do you pin the most on Pinterest? Sometimes we need a little help realizing our own interests.

Possible Blog Topics:

Below I’ve listed the blog categories on Bloglovin’ (Bloglovin is a blog reader that allows you to read all your blogs on one site. They let you know when it’s updated and they even help you find new blogs.) I added a few extras at the bottom of their list.

Blog Niche

Blog niche is a term you’ll hear a lot online. A blog niche is what you decide to focus your blog on. It encompasses the topics that you write about and the audience you hope to reach. According to Suzi, there are four main reasons your blog needs a niche:

  1. Improved Reader Experience
  2. Search Engine Authority
  3. Your Own Growth and Development
  4. Becoming Profitable

Narrowing down a blog topic is super beneficial all around. Hopefully these questions and tips will help you have a better idea on what type of blog you should start!

A few more tips for choosing a blog niche:

When you pick a subject you want to blog about make sure it is not too specific of a topic, or you’ll run out of things to blog about. For example, you might love cooking chicken and want to share all of your chicken recipes so you start a chicken recipe blog. What if your favorite food changes to fish in a year? Create a recipe blog and then you give yourself a little bit more room. Whatever you decide, make sure you are blogging about something you enjoy. Blogging takes time and if you enjoy what you are blogging about you are more likely to be a diligent, successful blogger!

What are you going to blog about?

I’d love to hear about what you’re thinking about blogging about. Leave a comment below and tell me about your plans! If you’re ready to get started, check out my how to start a blog post!

I would like to start a blog for seniors. I do realize a lot of seniors aren’t techies (nor am I) but it would be fun. There might be some politics thrown in for spice.

Hi Im very new to blogging and I would love to start a food blog but I’m not sure if its too early for me to start. I became a vegan in March of 2020 and during the lockdown I had to start cooking a lot and I’ve begun to fall in love with it but Im still trying to master some skills to share with people. Do you have any suggestions to how I could start one successfully even though I haven’t been a vegan for a long time?

Thanks a lot for a great article! But I must say it`s not always working like this. I am passionate about sport and one day I decided to create my sports blog. And even though the content was pretty valuable I could rank well and get traffic. You know why? Because the competition in the fitness niche is extremely high…So you need to make a pretty good research on your competitors to make sure that you have at least some chances to outrank them…After that, I chose music concert tickets niche and it went pretty good – the competition is much lower…
But if you actually decided to start a blog in a competitive niche, I have an advice for you. Pursue long tail keywords, create articles about very specific topics, where you have a lot of expertise and it could help you to outrank even some authoritative websites…

Of course, I’d like my potential blog to bring in income. So, my question to you is…. how would I make money on this specific topic?

Hey Kristie! Love this article. I am seriously thinking about starting my own blog. For the longest time I have struggled to find my passion or what i am “supposed” to be doing. I think I want to start a blog to help people that feel the same way. My thought is that it will partly be about myself trying all kinds of new things in order to see what I love doing, and partly attempting to connect and provide some clarity for people who feel that they don’t know what they should do. Does that sound like something that would make for a good blog? Do you have any further advice? Thanks!

That does sound like a good idea Keegan, because you have a way of connecting with your audience through a shared problem. Any blog that helps solve a problem is a good one in my mind. Also great that you’ll be sharing your journey.

I’m Shelby and I am looking to start a blog. My main goal from the blog is to earn enough income to become a stay at home mom (no kids ATM but we are planning ahead). I know blogs take time to pick up and want to start now so when the time comes, we will be ready. I enjoy DIY home projects, I also love home decor, and cooking! But I am also a crazy budgeter and love giving people financial advise! I don’t know what to go with. How do I pick???

Hi Shelby! Way to go planning in advance. Sounds like you have a good understanding of how blogs work. It can be hard to decide what to blog about, especially when you’re interested in so many things. Sometimes you just have to start writing about all the things until you find YOUR thing. As you write and reach an audience, you’ll know which subject to focus on the most.

What was one thing that was super hard for you, but learning how to rock it made life better/easier?

    Hey Kristie!
I’m just finishing high school and want to start to build a blog so I have a platform to look back on and maybe a small way to bring in money in the future.
I love writing, but I have a hard time narrowing down what I want to write about. I’m a passionate dancer (centered around ballet), I love traveling (but only go at least twice a year), I’m also a Christian and love to learn and write about my faith. How do I know what the audience will want? How do I structure a blog post? How do you organize it? Also, how do you remain consistent to post regularly?
Has your blog become a full-time occupation for you or do you run it as a side job? How much effort do you put into writing every day?

    Thank you!!!

You could start blogging about it all, and narrow in on what you like writing the most or what resonates with your future audience best.

Blogging is intentionally part time for me right now, as I am a full time stay at home mom. I work at least 3 hours a day. I can definitely be a full time thing though.

Hey it’s me Rinoj. I needed to create a blog for my softskills class. I love to share stories but I really don’t know how to put it out in words. But I wanna learn. Yea and out of nowhere today I happen to randomly search topics that I could write for a blog. I narrowed it down to fitness, food&drink, men’s fashion, gaming, sports and education. That’s a lot! I know right? So what I wanted to ask was how do I help myself to choose a specific topic that I could write on. Can a blogger blog on different topics?

HI Rinoj. Yes, that is a lot of topics to write on. A blogger can blog about different topics if you think your audience will enjoy them all. Sometimes you just have to start blogging about all the things and then as you work on your blog and progress, you’ll naturally start focusing on just a few of them that you like best and that resonate with your readers. Best of luck!

It can be hard to decide on a topic. You said you like to help people – that’s great new because bloggers have a huge opportunity to help others.

Try thinking of it this way. If all of your readers were you three years ago – what would you help them with? What would you want to tell them? How could you make their life easier or better or more entertaining?

I want to blog on DIY for women but narrowing down is a problem
I do lots of DIY in crafts organization etc but also techie things which helps me do my own DIY faster
For example to draw large letters instead of drawing with hands I will print outline on excel and then trace out.
My problem is a part of me is nerd
The other part is a fun loving chic who decorates, craft etc

      You can start writing about cars and bikes. Open a blank document and write what comes to mind. There are tons of things you can write on cars and bikes, such as;

      Tips for buying cars/bikes
      How to clean cars/bikes
      The best brands of cars/bikes
      Cars and bikes spare parts.

There are no limits to what you can write on.

    Hi Kristie,

Like you, I’ve started a blog in the past in a niche just because the money. Only mine wasn’t coupons, it was junk cars.

I kept mine a lot longer than you kept yours. I think I had it for 6 months and was able to make some money with it.

The downside is that I hated writing content for it. I had no interest in junk cars, I just went into that niche because of the money. That was a huge mistake and wasted so much time on a blog I shouldn’t have even started.

I eventually, let that site go and now I am in a niche that I love. I too write about the techie stuff of blogging. I figure with my WordPress freelancing skills, I can share what I know about working with WordPress. I am not a designer or PHP developer.

However, I’ve managed to create a freelancing gig that allows me to work full-time from home. I am working on my blog to move away from freelancing so I can work full-time on my blog.

I totally agree with you about choosing something that you’re passionate in. While I don’t know everything about WordPress, I love writing tutorials and sharing my own personal experience.

When I first started my blog, I was worried that I didn’t know enough about it. However, I decided to go for it and just do it. It’s been good so far and the best part is that I’ve even made some money. Not enough to walk away from my WordPress freelancing gig.

But in time, I have no doubt my dream will become a reality. It just takes a lot of hard work, but I always make sure that I am doing something for my blog everyday.

Thanks for sharing this, have a great day 🙂

    Susan

Anyways, my husband randomly suggested I just start reviewing the makeup samples that I get through my Ipsy subscription. I figure if I at least have his support–I’d consider myself successful. Then I opened this post you wrote (from my secret “blogging dreams” Pinterest board!) and it made me feel so much better about not really knowing exactly what I want to write about from the start. Also, I seriously relate to your domain name! Thanks again! Also, sorry for the long comment–I’m just kinda excited and inspired!

I love long comments, so than you! I’m glad you’re feeling inspired. Having support from family (especially husbands) is very helpful with blogging. I’m working on a start a blog worksheet right now, I’ll send it over to you when I’m done.

Starting out by reviewing make up is a good way to go.

yup! Narrowing in on a niche will certainly help your blog grow + make money, but sometimes you need to figure out what your thing is. You’ll get there!

What do you do when there isn’t really one thing you do a lot or are good at? I like to write and I started my blog with intentions of starting a creative writing blog but have yet to come up with even the slightest idea of what to use as content for a creative writing blog. When I research similar blogs, all that comes up are blogs with writing prompts…

    Hi,

Had been through the great blog of yours. Truly inspiring. I am planning to start a niche-less lifestyle blog where I would write about any thing that I like till I find my niche . I cannot decide a good name for the same and for domain as well. it would be really helpful if you can suggest some name.

Thanks in advance and thank you for the beautifully written suggestions

A lot of people who start out that way, blogging about everything until they find their focus, use their own name for the site and domain. It gives you some freedom for it to become whatever you want it to.

Here’s the problem…what if I really want to blog about ALL the things?! I have this idea in my head for a “start living the kind of life you want” blog, and I suppose it’s a conglomerate positive psychology/travel/goal-setting/healthy living/etc blog. I’ve had a fashion/lifestyle blog in the past but didn’t feel that it was really having the impact I wanted. I want my blog to benefit people’s lives more than showing them how to style their newest scarf.

Do you think I’ll run into trouble if I try to encompass…well, everything? Should I have a more narrow focus?

Good question. A lot of it depends on the purpose of your blog and who you intend to be your audience. There have been a lot of interesting posts by other bloggers lately about how to run a nicheless blog.

It’s okay to have a nicheless blog
      How to Rock Nicheless Blogging

You could be successful with a focused blog about all the things. Having a focus “start living the life you want” could help center your posts and attract your dream audience.

I have considered starting a tall lifestyle blog because I am tall for a woman and I get asked occasionally where I shop for my tall clothes and plus there isn’t very much information out there for the tall community. My issue is I’m worried that it’s too narrow of a topic and that I will run out of post ideas. Do you think my idea is a good idea and if so, what are topics I could write about? I have thought of taking some of the “tall people problems” and writing related stories I have experienced myself with that “problem”, writing short biographies of successful tall people, the shopping aspect…like where to shop for tall clothes and maybe research ways to save money on tall clothes…that’s going to be tough…more fabric means more money and u typically don’t see a lot of coupons for tall people shops…

I don’t think that would be too narrow of a topic. In addition to tips, you could just be a tall size fashion blogger. I’m sure people would love to see different outfit ideas.

Thanks for this. It’s useful to have a list of topics to blog about. Although, I’m trying to start a comedy blog. I feel that I need some sort of premise to put the comedy into! I guess it’s a long and tough journey. I guess the main idea is to just keep writing posts! Eventually, I’ll have a decent blog…

A comedy blog sounds like fun, I think a premise would be good, but until you find one that works for you, just start writing about a bunch of topics. You’ll find your voice! Good luck Calum.

Hi Kristie. I am so confused about what kind of blog to start with. So i just typed in google and your link was the first one to pop up and i just went through all the information that is shown and quite frankly i am inspired to start a blog. My dream is to travel, but i haven’t really gone out of the country. Hoping to seek some opportunities in life. i was thinking maybe ill start a blog about the love that i have for travel and also have some beautiful places in mind to show the travelers or people that are hopeful to travel one day like me.
It sounds a little different i guess, but i would really like some advice on that?
    What do you think?

Hi Nikhit! I think a travel blog would be fabulous! It’s okay that you haven’t travelled out of country yet. Sometimes, blogging helps us get out and be accountable for doing the things we want to do most. Start by documenting the local travels you are taking already and start that blog of yours! It’s okay to start small and work up to something bigger, blogging about travelling might give you those opportunities you’re looking for in life.

Hi. This post and your entire blog has been so helpful. Im thinking of starting a blog on high school with study tips and advice etc and youve really inspired me to get started. Im worried that my topic is a bit odd/boring. Id like to hear your opinion on it?

I don’t think your topic is odd/boring. Blogs weren’t around when I was in High School, so not sure if I would have visited a site about help with high school and study tips – but maybe!

A lot of people start successful blogs focusing on different studdy tips and advice, so I would think a High School focused one would be great too.

Would high schoolers be your target audience?

I have been blogging for two years now. But I feel the blog I had isn’t the blog I want anymore. I have come to realize a few things so I really want find a new niche or something new to blog about. I just don’t know what. I love your question about “What am I already doing?”. That got me thinking about reorganizing and purging, which is all I seem to be doing these days. My question is how do I share these ideas without taking pictures? Since I am living with my in-laws, I am not sure how they would feel about pictures from inside the house being shared online. Is there way I could still share this journey without having alot of photos? Another thing I do alot is game. But would a gaming blog really do well?

Sorry to ask so many questions. Glad I found your site though.

I think an organizing/purging blog would be a great niche. People are really interested in simplifying and minimalism. As for pictures, try and find bloggers that talk about similar things and see what kind of pictures they use. I think a lot of nature, peaceful pictures could be good. Or, close up pictures of the objects your are organizing (close enough that you won’t recognize the house).

      Good luck!

That sounds like a great start! Most bloggers blog about a little bit of everything at first, until they really find out what they like posting about. Your niche is “lifestyle” blog!

I never know what category to call my blog. I’m in the process of rebranding (new name and domain), but my blog is homesteading and personal preparedness. None of those categories ever seem to fit.

According to Wikipedia: “Broadly defined, homesteading is a lifestyle of self-sufficiency.” According to that, I guess you could classify yourself as a lifestyle blogger. I think that personal preparedness is a great topic! Emergency preparedness gets 8,000 searches a month. Plus, it is a very pinnable topic. Sounds like you have a great niche!
